Mice vs. Voles

Mice and voles can appear similar at first glance. When you take a closer look at both species of rodent you will see that they actually have more differences than similarities.

Both Mice and Voles:

  • Rodents
  • Approximately 5 – 8 inches long
  • Grey / brown fur

Mice:

  • Slender bodies
  • Pointed noses
  • Will eat almost anything
  • Large ears
  • Tail as long as body
  • Create burrows/nests in sheltered areas
  • Lifespan of 15 – 18 months
  • 5 – 6 pups per litter
  • Commonly found in homes
  • Don’t create tunnels / trails on lawns

Voles:

  • Short tails
  • Round noses
  • Small round ears
  • Create tunnels / tails on lawns
  • Eat grains, seeds, and plants
  • Lifespan of 2 – 12 months
  • Stocky bodies
  • 3 – 10 pups per litter
  • Rarely found in homes
  • Found in grassy areas
