Spider Control Tips for Your Home

Are the spiders in your home and around your yard stressing out your family and guests?

If you need to get rid of spiders for everyone’s peace of mind, this can be done quickly with a treatment and is helped by reducing the conditions that attract spiders and their food. Spiders play an important role in the ecosystem by eating insects and other bugs, and they rarely bite people, but many people have an intense fear of spiders. It is better to reduce spiders rather than trying to completely eliminate them.

At Poulin’s, our experience has shown us that spiders start outdoors before eventually finding their way indoors. We recommend having a treatment done every year in the late spring to early summer, to keep the population of spiders and their prey low.

Effective spider control includes prevention. By making a few changes to your home and yard, you can significantly reduce spiders around your home and enjoy your property all summer long.

How to Stop Attracting Spiders and Their Food

Spiders can be found where there are insects and other bugs to eat. Reduce the amount of prey available for spiders and their population will decrease.

Many insects including flies, mosquitoes, beetles, and moths gather around lights, moisture, and in sheltered areas and these places are where spiders and their webs will be found. If you are wondering what the spiders are eating, you can check spider webs to see what they are catching.

Bright lights are very attractive to many insects. Change outdoor lighting to attract fewer insects by using yellow or warm-toned LEDs. Move lights away from windows and doors to prevent more insects from getting inside your home.

Physically keep bugs and spiders out of your home by repairing the weather stripping around windows and doors, repairing screens, and using door sweeps.

Outside your home, yard clean-up is a perfect opportunity to cut down on spider-friendly environments. Piles of leaves, stacked firewood, old building materials, and overgrown vegetation create shelter for insects and spiders. Store firewood off the ground and away from the home. Trim shrubs, branches, vines, and other plants to keep them from touching your home and acting as a bridge for spiders. Clean gutters and make sure water drains away from the foundation. Eliminate standing water in the yard. Remove existing spiders and webs with a vacuum and a broom with a long handle. If you want to do your own treatment, you can find an instructional video here and supplies from our store here.

Inside your home, clean regularly, store food and garbage in sealed containers, and reduce insect access to moisture to keep spiders and other pest populations low. Improved ventilation and short-term measures such as dehumidifiers can help reduce moisture in attics and damp basements. Put sticky glue traps around your home in corners and behind furniture to monitor for spiders and other bugs.

Professional spider treatments are effective at reducing insect activity and discouraging spiders from settling near your home. Outdoor treatments can be applied into cracks and crevices where spiders might hide such as around foundations, windows, doors, garage entrances, vents, where soffits meet siding, under decks, and other accessible areas of concern.
