QUESTION: How do I keep spiders out of my house?

ANSWER: In with your spring clean-up, it’s a great time of year to pest proof your house. Some suggestions are:

  • Install screens and weather stripping on windows and door sweeps on doors.
  • Fix any cracks in siding and walls, especially where pipes or wires enter the home.
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house.
  • Use a yellow light bulb or sodium vapour light bulb. These attract less flying insects which will prevent future spider activity.

During the spring, spiders are starting to move around. The egg sacks hatch in the early in the year. If the weather drops at night, the spiders look for openings into the house. Poulin’s Pest Control strongly encourages a spring and fall treatment for spiders. The treatments consist of removing any spider webs, sacks or debris from around the house. Once completed, a residue insecticide will be applied to cracks, crevices and voids around the house. This will provide spider relief for the summer. The fall treatment consists of the same treatment but prevents spiders from over wintering.

Ensuring wood piles, clutter and storage material are not stored against the house. Items that are not moved often usually collect leaves and debris, which attracts crawling insects. The spiders are then attracted to his area because of the crawling insects. Then when the spiders over populate they look at moving into your house.

If spiders are becoming an issue at your residence, Poulin’s can come out and eliminate the problem. Call or come and see us today for all your pest control needs.
